Kazabagarura

2024 | Mixed Media on Canvas, Stretched On Wood Frame

Kazabagarura was a water spring in Nyamasheke, a district of Rwanda, during a time when the country was still developing. It served as the primary water source in areas where access was limited. The artist remembers spending two days at the spring without success. In winter, water was plentiful, but during summer, everyone returned to Kazabagarura, where crowds often fought desperately for access, risking their lives. One day, as a young child, he spent two days at the spring until soldiers returned, surprised to find him still there. They assisted him in fetching water, and from that day on, the spring became known as Kazabagarura. It stands as a reminder of their origins and the journey they have made to reach where they are today.
