Umudugudu W'amahoro / Peace Village
Umudugudu W'amahoro / Peace Village
2024 | Acrylic On Canvas, Stretched On Wood Frame
This painting is inspired by a small village known as Umudugudu w'amahoro (Peace Village), which is primarily located on the fringe of downtown Kigali. Unfortunately, these villages are gradually disappearing and being demolished due to the ongoing development in the country, where new tall buildings with advanced architecture are becoming more common.
The artwork captures the essence of a semi-urban village in Kigali, characterized by its signature small, tightly clustered houses. The bold palette of bright, contrasting colors—each house adorned in striking hues of red, green, yellow, blue, and orange—symbolizes the vibrancy and diversity of life within the village. The close arrangement of buildings, stacked closely together, reflects the bustling energy and communal atmosphere of this semi-urban setting.
This mix of serenity and vibrancy effectively mirrors the essence of the Peace Village, symbolizing harmony amid the lively spirit of communal life and reflecting the peace and unity that thrive within the village.
