African Mamas
2023 | Mixed Media On Canvas, Stretched On Wood Frame
This Rwandan artwork depicts the lives of African mothers and the lack of respect they have faced in the past and continue to face today. In their communities, they are often confined to domestic duties and not given opportunities outside the home. This can lead to them being perceived as doing nothing, despite their tireless work in managing household chores, caring for children, and fulfilling societal expectations. Such beliefs are insulting to those who hold them. This work highlights the universal truth that anyone, regardless of gender, is essential. Men owe their existence to women, and true masculinity is not defined solely by gender. This serves as a poignant reminder of the value and potential of mothers in society.
