This brilliant piece depicts a young lady who smokes as a way to deal with her problems. In the painting, the smoke becomes the hand that holds her down. It symbolizes addiction, diseases, and other things that may come from being addicted to drugs. The painting tells us that some of the activities we use to liberate ourselves could end up making our lives harder.
